2011

1+1=1 has been invited to design a vision for the future development of Ulaanbaatar city centre.

The capital of Mongolia is growing at an unprecedented rate, mainly under the pressure of the urbanization of the nomadic population and of globalization.

Following the booming of the mining sector and the consequent economic growth, the city is witnessing a fast modernization: office towers, residential developments, shopping centers, ruthless traffic are growing without a quality masterplan.

The result is an unpleasant juxtaposition of scruffy residential buildings built during the Soviet period and of soulless new developments.

The overall urban landscape is very hard towards the human being.

On this basis, 1+1=1 proposal for the site is an awesome cityscape that provides quality and enhances urban experiences through designed public spaces, covered promenades, green areas, leisure and cultural institutions, the enhancement of the river banks, bus stops designed taking in consideration the harsh climate, a research campus and a new expo area.

In our aim, by the integration of these elements, Ulaanbaatar makes a huge improvement and transformation in the quality of the city’s environment establishing the living standards of the future.
